Help with Getting Online

Accessing the Internet

You may have recently heard the phrase digital inclusion and wondered what it's all about. Digital inclusion is a new strategy developed by the Welsh Government. The aim of the digital inclusion strategy is to improve people's lives by providing access to digital technology, like computers, and helping people develop the skills to use this technology.

The benefits of being online

Enabling people to freely access the internet is about reducing social isolation and helping people benefit as both citizens and consumers.

The Internet can open up a world of information and opportunities. Some advantages include:

  • Consumer choice: The internet allows access to the big consumer savings by using comparison sites and online shopping to search for the best deals.
  • Savings: Online deals and paperless billing can reduce your utility bills.
  • Education: Access to a computer and the internet can improve children's and adult's educational performance.
  • Employment and Skills: It is estimated that between 75% and 90% of jobs require at least some computer use. Being online also gives people more opportunities to search and apply for jobs.
  • Social Inclusion: Internet access allows people to keep in touch through email and other social media sites. It allows those who may otherwise be isolated, to meet new people who share the same hobbies and interests.
  • Information: Internet access opens up a world of information, including easy access to publications such as newspapers and magazines.
  • Managing your finances: Online banking can help you to keep track of your finances and stick to a budget.
  • Travel: You can plan your journeys and book travel tickets.
  • Entertainment: You can watch TV and films on the internet and listen to radio stations from all over the world.
