Below is a brief overview of the main projects and programmes that the Housing Renewal Team of the Council are engaged in to improve homes within the County Borough:

1. Renewal Areas

The Council currently has one 'active' renewal area - Bedlinog & Trelewis. Declaration in May 2011 until May 2017, allows the Council to bid for funds from Welsh Government to deliver a range of housing, environmental and social interventions in the area. Examples of projects undertaken in recent years include:

  • Home Front Scheme - grant of up to £15,000 per property to renovate the front facade of a group of properties. THis is a strategic scheme and therefore areas are determined by the Council. If you live in an eligile street in the renewal area, you will be contacted in due course.
  • Cosy Homes Grant - up to £5,000 is available to persons aged 65yrs and who, have savings of less than £16,000 and require some energy efficiency work to their home. This typically includes insulation, new c/h boiler or new uPVC windows and doors.
  • Free Home Security Measures - for elderly or vulnerable households
  • Environmental Improvements - including new car parks, street lighting, traffic calming

2. Houses 2 Homes Empty Property Loans (H2H)

In 2012 the Welsh Government allocated funds to Councils accross Wales, to allow them to begin issuing interest free empty property loans. A loan of up to £25,000 per unit may be available subject to the applicant and property meeting the relevant terms & conditions. H2H Loans are available Borough-wide, subject to available funds.

3. Private Sector Housing Loans (Interest Free)

This new loan product is expected to be available to eligible residents from September 2014. Welsh Government are investing £20M accross Wales over a 3 year period to support property owners undertake much needed repairs or refurbishment works to their dwellings. 4. ARBED 2 programme

The Council has successfully proposed a number of Schemes to Welsh Government, which have been supported, funded and managed by them. These include:

  • Shingrig Estate, Trelewis - External Wall Insulation project
  • Garden Village, Trelewis - provision of mains gas and central heating upgrade project
  • Penydarren - External Wall Insulation project

5. ECO Schemes 

ECO stands for Energy Company Obligation and refers to an obligation placed upon the big 6 energy companies by Westminster Government to invest millions of pounds into improving the energy efficiency of some of the UK's most energy inefficient housing stock. To this end MTCBC has engaged with a number of energy companies in an attempt to secure funding to improve some of the coldest properties in the county borough.
